National Curriculum Intent
The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
At Kingsmoor Primary School, we intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all pupils and allows them to be successful mathematicians who can recall facts fluently, can solve problems and can reason mathematically.
We intend for this to set all pupils up with the skills and knowledge to be successful in their future lives, and to help them to understand and contribute to the world around them.
We incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high quality activities where children can develop determination, perseverance and resilience.
The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Implementation:
At Kingsmoor, we follow a mastery approach to mathematics, aiming for the children to have a deep and secure understanding which they can apply to different contexts, including their everyday lives. We encourage children to work through concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to guide them through their understanding of mathematical processes.
Mental Fluency:
At Kingsmoor, we strongly believe that the quick recall and understanding of key number facts is essential for children to become successful mathematicians. We teach daily fluency sessions with the aim that children can recall these facts quickly and accurately, whilst recognising when and how to use an efficient mental method to work out a calculation and when a written method is needed. |
