English Curriculum Statement
Intent:
At Kingsmoor Primary School, we believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. We aim to inspire an appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage and a habit of reading widely and often. We recognise the importance of nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts.
We want to inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening and be able to use discussion to communicate and further their learning.
We believe that children need to develop a secure knowledge-base in English, which follows a clear pathway of progression as they advance through the primary curriculum. We believe that a secure basis in English skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society.

Implementation:
These aims are embedded across our English lessons and the wider curriculum. We have a rigorous and well -organised English curriculum that provides many purposeful opportunities for reading, writing and discussion.
Teachers use a mixture of book studies and film units, as appropriate to their classes, but also ensure that cross curricular links with concurrent topic work are woven into the programme of study.
Our curriculum closely follows the aims of the National Curriculum for English 2014.
The National Curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:
In Key Stage 2, the children have daily whole class reading lessons where they study a class novel as well as linked themes.
We use a wide variety of quality texts and resources to motivate and inspire our children.
We also provide a wealth of enrichment opportunities, from attending an annual Poetry Slam to entering creative writing competitions.
This ensures that children benefit from access to positive role models from the local and wider locality.

A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school as they allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.

Writing for a purpose statement:At Kingsmoor Primary School our long term plan for writing uses 4 main purposes across KS1 and KS2: writing to entertain, to inform, to persuade and to discuss.
In KS1, we focus on the purposes of writing to entertain and inform. In LKS2, we look at writing to entertain, inform and persuade. In UKS2, we cover all of the 4 main purposes of writing. We have two main outcomes each half term. Lessons leading up to writing a final piece, can really embed grammar and punctuation skills; investigate vocabulary appropriate to the piece; unpick high quality examples; create plans and write collaboratively with peers. Children are able to secure their skills and experience success. They begin to develop a deep understanding of a particular purpose for writing. |
Spelling Statement:Spelling, along with vocabulary and phonics are critical foundational skills that help our pupils with reading fluency and reading comprehension. At Kingsmoor Primary School, we use Read Write Inc. in KS1 and progress on to Spelling Shed in KS2 to deliver a full spelling curriculum. |
